THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FUNCTIONAL STRUCTURAL PROPERTIES AND SPATIAL CONFIGURATION PROPERTIES IN ANCIENT CITIES: THE CASE OF POMPEII CITY

Abstract

This article is based on the investigation of the urban planning principles and archaeological data together with the analysis of the spatial structure features of the ancient cities with the space syntax (Space Syntax), which provides a comparative study between the features of the spatial structure. For the study area, one of the best well-preserved ancient cities and have been unearthed largely by the excavations today, the Roman Imperial Period city of Pompeii was selected. In this context, spatial readings in Pompeii ancient city with space syntax model will be done and functional structure characteristics and spatial configuration will be examined based on city plan. As a result, for the reading of the ancient cities spatial organizational structure also can be used in the archaeological studies; a mathematical model of space syntax analysis method of availability will be discussed.
